...so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him. Hebrews 9:28

Sorrento

After our tours of Herculaneum and Pompeii, we headed to Sorrento, a resort town with mountains on one side and the Mediterranean Sea on the other.  It is known for its lemon, orange, and olive trees.  We rented an apartment from a wonderful older Italian couple named Luciana and Gino.  Their house was right next door so we saw quite a bit of them.  Luciana spoke fairly good English, but Gino spoke very little English.  Gino, he communicated with his smile ~ he was always smiling.  He stopped over a couple of mornings with fresh baked goods Luciana had made for us, so WE were smiling a lot too.

This was the pathway from the street to our apartment.

This is the walkway between our apartment and L & G's house.  The flowers were gorgeous!

This is the view of the port from a viewing spot near our apartment, with a rare moment of at least somewhat blue skies.

There is a huge drop from the city center down to the port.  We did a lot of walking in Sorrento, scaling this hill a number of times.

I loved the tiny alleys that made up the shop-filled streets of "Old Sorrento".

Sorrento was very colorful.  Also, here you can see why it is described as a cliff-side village.

When the boys saw sand, there was no getting out of making our way down.

Who cares if it is cold and rainy????  Not us!

Another view of the port.  The big ship on the end of the pier is the ferry to Capri, which we did take later that week.

This is a view back toward the port from the ferry.

Feels like we never run out of churches to duck into and check out.  This was the ceiling of the cathedral in Sorrento.   Even the tiny churches in smaller towns were spectacular.

In addition to growing lemons and olives, Sorrento is known for selling beautiful inlaid wood.   The back doors of the church were a wonderful example of why.

The stations of the cross were gorgeous too!

I had to laugh at the sign on the door of this lace shop! :)

Here is a picture of the boys with Luciana and Gino.  They were SO sweet!!!
