One of our day trips from Sorrento was along the Amalfi Coast, which is the coastline along the southwestern coast of Italy....the shin of "the boot", so to speak. It is a string of cliff towns right along the sea. We started at our farthest point, Paestum, and worked out way back to Sorrento. Paestum has wonderfully preserved Greek ruins to explore. We had some sunshine while in Paestum, which made it all the more beautiful.
This is the remains of a Greek tomb. The Romans didn't want to destroy it so they just buried it. It was uncovered in 1952 when the site was being excavated and opened. There were no bodies in it, just 9 vases (I think those pictures ended up farther down in the post), one of which still had perfectly preserved honey in it. It was STILL liquid (from 500 BC). Guess that tells you something about honey!
One of the other of the 3 remaining Greek temple ruins.
This is the remains of a Roman amphitheater.
This is called the Ekklesiasterion ~ a meeting place for the ancient Greeks.
These are the vases found in the tomb that are now displayed in the Archaeological Museum across the road.
And, of course, the boys could not pass up an opportunity to jump in the water. It was incredibly windy on the beach (and not all that warm despite the sun), but naturally that did not stop them.
A beautiful view of the Mediterranean.
We drove back to Sorrento along the coast and stopped in a couple of spots for some pictures. It really was beautiful!
Next up: Capri
Some AMAZING photos in this post Becky!! And I always smile when your boys find and enjoy the beach - whatever the weather. I LOVE THAT!!
